The top rated snow blowers are not the snow blowers most people buy.
“Best” means different things to different people. Some of you look at Amazon’s best-selling snowblowers, while others read every word of Consumer Reports Recommended Snow Blowers list. Please remember, the best snow blower as rated by a review site, online reviews or even by MovingSnow.com is not the always the best snow blower for you. There are many factors that you should consider including the area you want to clear, the surface you want to clear and how much snow you usually get. MovingSnow’s goal is to help you find the best snow thrower for you.
This top 20 list is based on the discussions, interest, intent to buy and sales of residential snow blowers on MovingSnow.com. This list is not reflective of actual sales by the manufactures or retailers. Other websites and forums will have a different viewpoint than MovingSnow.com .

The consumer is now in charge.
Today’s buyer doesn’t go to the dealer first. Instead they do all their research online and only go to the dealer if they can’t get the product online or at a local retailer. Today’s buyer wants the online interaction of the manufacture, dealer, and retailer. It’s no longer what a report or article says is best. The consumer can now do the research and make the decision without ever looking at the info hidden behind a subscription or walking into a dealer. Today’s consumer talks not only to his neighbor but also his peers, family and friends. And they are all just a keystroke away.
People are reading and listening to what others like themselves say on the internet. Top ten reviews and ratings from review organizations don’t have as much influence as before. Five years ago a magazine could tell you an item was great and they sold thousands. Today if 5 people on a forum state the snow blower has problems it negatively affects sales. Case in point, Husqvarna has a good snow blower but there is an apparent problem with the auger belt. This is not a major issue, because it doesn’t happen on every machine and only happens under a heavy load, but Husqvarna is not being transparent with the belt issue and the internet discussion groups are causing large numbers of customers not to buy. Husqvarna still feels the best way to handle it is through one dealer service bulletin. If I were a company like Husqvarna (or Toro, Honda, Ariens, Cub Cadet) I would have the problem, the real cause and the info to fix it on the company blog, newsletter and Facebook group as quickly as possible.
Video killed the radio star. Faster and easier to use the the wave of the future. The Toro SnowMaster is just the beginning……

Ariens Company launched a new logo for the Ariens® brand of outdoor power equipment this week. The Ariens brand, which has existed for more than 80 years, represents premium, durable, snow and lawn and garden equipment.
The new brand mark blends the company’s history with a new, modern look. The Ariens gear has been used by the company for decades, on both equipment and in corporate marks, and has now been incorporated into the brand once again. The gear was included as part the brand mark to put history and legacy at the forefront of the brand conversation.
While the gear stands for where the company has been, the redesigned Ariens font is bold, crisp and prominent. The new look can be described as modern, yet timeless, and represents the company’s future of innovation and advancement.
“The logo marks the beginning of new chapter of innovation that will carry our iconic brand into the future,” said Ariens Company Chairman/CEO Dan Ariens. “We have an exciting few years ahead of us as we rebrand and introduce some new and innovative equipment to the marketplace.”
As part of the launch, Ariens introduced two variations of the logo – a primary, vertically-stacked version and a secondary, horizontally-aligned version. The placement of the gear and the text is reminiscent of the Gravely® logo format, which was introduced in 2014.
”By aligning the overall look of the two logos, the brands are now more closely related from a visual standpoint and can be easily recognized as being a part of the same parent company,” Ariens said.
The new logo will be introduced initially on Ariens snow product, the first of which will be seen in Ariens dealerships, The Home Depot® and True Value® stores starting this summer. Lawn and garden equipment will have the new logo beginning in Fall 2016. The first look at the new lawn and garden lineup will take place at GIE + Expo 2016 in Louisville, Ky.

This is a list of facts to help you decide on the best snow blower. There is no specific order to this list but if you read everything here you will know more than 80% of the sales associates and dealers. I’ll expand this list as needed. Feel free to ask questions at the end of the article. When you are done reading this article go here for the next step in finding the best snow blower for you: What’s next? Go to the Top 20 List
Please, please do your research before you buy any type of snow removal equipment.
A good piece of snow equipment can be great investment and will last you many years if you make the right decision. Deciding which snow equipment you should buy can be a large investment in time and money and it should not be taken lightly. After reading this buying guide I hope you will have a better understanding of not only what type of snow equipment is best for you, but how it works and what it can do for you.
BEFORE YOU BUY A SNOW BLOWER, ASK YOURSELF:
These questions in part will help decide what type of snow equipment you will ultimately purchase. Once you determine the best type, then we will go shopping for the one that is best for you!
If I can stress only one point, it is do your research before you buy your snow equipment. I want you to make the best choice the first time. Educate, educate, educate, yourself and you cannot go wrong. Purchasing a snowblower is a huge investment in time and money and it should not be taken lightly. I hope that after reading this buying guide you have a better understanding of not only what a snowblower is, but how it works and what it can do for you. Let this guide act as your starting position, pointing you towards the right snow blower for the season.
I read dozens of reviews every year where an owner uses their brand new snow blower for 10 -30 minutes. The snow blower stops running and they can’t get it started again. I read hundreds of reviews every year where a new owner used their snow blower for the first time and loved it. But when they went to use the second time – it would not start. They bring it back and the repair person tells them they need a new carburetor and it’s your fault the carb is bad.
Gas Snow Blowers really are no more difficult to maintain than your gas push mower but they do operate under extreme weather conditions so it is imperative that you do a few things differently.
So take your old can, pour the fuel into your car. Then hang it upside down so the spout is hanging down and let it dry out for 6 hours. Every time it rains or snows do the same thing.
Or buy a new fuel, sealed can.
2. I would like you to have no issues with your new snow blower. So you have an old can and you go add fresh fuel to it and pour that fuel in your new snow blower’s fuel tank. The new snow blower runs fine for a while, but quits and will not restart. the cause is probably some kind of contaminent in the gas can. Spiders, dust, and everything else that crawls/blows into the open spout. Those contaminants clog the really tiny – fuel efficient jets in today’s carbs. (Yes, your old mower runs fine because it’s older carb has much larger inside ports and passageways))
So take your old can, pour the fuel into your car. Then hang it upside down so the spout is hanging down and let it dry out for 6 hours. Every time it rains or snows do the same thing.
Or buy a new fuel, sealed can.
3. If you don’t use your snow blower often, say once or twice a year. Or, if you are putting it away for the summer I highly recommend TruFuel. Yes, the fuel is expensive but it’s a lot cheaper than a new carb.
For storage run the existing fuel out of the snow blower or siphon it out of the tank if you know how. Then put a pint or two of TruFuel in the tank, start the engine and let it run about half-throttle for 10 minutes. I have one snow blower here with a 208 cc PowerMore engine that I don’t use. It has been sitting for 2 years with TruFuel in it. I had to move it last month and it started on the second pull! I gave you a link for TruFuel at Amazon but you can get it by the quart at any Home Depot, hardware store, or farm store.
4. If you run your snow blower more than a few times a year then I suggest the sealed gas can – fuel stabilizer method. You need a new sealed gas can. I like this one. It works very well. No Spill Fuel Can. I put use 2 tablespoons per gallon of Sea Foam in the fuel when I go buy the gas. (5 gallon tank that’s 10 tablespoons)
STA-BIL 360 works well also. Finally, in the winter if the fuel in my gas can is more than a month old I’ll put that in my car and go buy fresh.
Your new snow blower’s manual states maintenance schedules in hours but there is no hour meter on your new snow blower. The easy way to keep track is to remember how long it usually takes you to clear your snow. Then divide the listed maintenance schedule by that time to determine when to do the maintenance. I do recommend following the schedule or performing the maintenance every spring before you put the snow blower in storage. Whatever is the shortest.
Two-stage snow blowers are best for gravel areas. The wheels are powered, pushing the unit. The front auger housing is equipped with adjustable skid shoes. You can adjust the skid shoes so there is a gap between the bottom scraper of the auger housing so the snow blower won’t pick up rocks and throw them through the chute.
This makes two-stage snow blowers the best choice for gravel surfaces. Single stage snow throwers are not a good choice because the auger/impeller touches the ground when moving snow and can easily pick up and throw rocks.
In theory yes, in reality no.
Single stage snow blowers only work on hard surfaces like your cement driveway. Single-stage snow throwers with 205cc and larger engines will clear heavy, wet snow but if the snow is wet enough they will only throw it a few feet. Snow throwers with smaller motors may not even throw it out of the chute. In addition all single-stage snow throwers will only clear a maximum of 6-8 inches in one pass. The only exception to this is the Toro SnowMaster. The SnowMaster will handle snow up to 16 inches deep.
Two-stage and 3-stage snow blowers will handle deeper snow but have the same problem with wet heavy snow. The really wet snow and then a warm-up above freezing will cause most 2-stage snow blowers to plug up or just blurp the snow out the discharge chute. That’s why all manufacturers state “up to X feet”
Economy and residential snow blowers will not throw as far as heavy-duty and professional snow blowers. You do get what you pay for with snow blowers. In particular there are no 2 or 3 stage snow blowers under $500 that are good.
The engine power is very critical for either type. The more horsepower the better it will handle the snow you get.
This is one way to measure the ability of the snow blower and how effectively the snow is thrown from the chute. The longer the throwing distance, the better. If your snow blower does not throw far you may not be able to throw the snow all the way off your drive the first time. When you can throw snow farther you will have shorter piles near the drive which will also create less drifting when it snows again. When it melts, the risk of run-off flooding your sidewalks and pathways will be reduced.
Longer is better and don’t worry about it throwing too far. The chute and deflector can control the direction and how far it throws if you need to keep it out a certain area. In other words you can use the chute and deflector to put the snow exactly where you want it. Unfortunately, each brand measures this a different way so it really has no meaning when comparing one brand to another.
Tons per hour tell you how much snow the snow blower can move in an hour. In theory a heavy-duty snow blower should move more tons per hour than an economy model. Unfortunately, each brand measures this a different way so it really has no meaning when comparing one brand to another.
You do get what you pay for IF you know these quality levels.
Two stage snow blowers range in size from 22 to 34 inches. I divide the huge list into four types, or classes:
Economy: These are the cheapest snow blowers you find at the retailers and online. They have small engines and very few features that make them easy to use. These are not the snow blower that you buy your mom because it’s “small.” Craftsman gray snow blowers, Huskee, Troy-Bilt Storm 2410, basically any snow blower that now-days costs less than $600 is considered an economy model.
Residential: Some online stores call this grade “entry level.” This quality of snow blower will last the typical homeowner with a normal sized suburban paved driveway many years. If you live in the Midwest or any other area of the country that gets 60 inches of snow or less a year these are a good choice. Every major brand makes snow blowers in this quality level. Sizes range from 24 to 30 inches and cost $650 to $1200.
Heavy-Duty: Some brands call this grade Landowner or Professional. Some online stores call this mid-grade. Bigger engines to get the job done faster. Bigger tires to give you better traction. Some models in this class give you high speed impeller, heated hand grips, hydrostatic transmissions, power steering, thicker skid shoes, ball bearings instead of bronze, and/or better chute controls. If get a lot of snow or get snow more than once a week in the winter these will last you. If you have more snow to clear than you typical suburban home these are the best choice.
Commercial: There are commercial warranties and then there are commercial snow blowers. Commercial snow blowers are heavy duty snow blowers capable of moving 10 times more snow in a year than a residential grade machine and still lasting many years. Commercial warranties are restrictions placed by the manufacturer on residential and heavy-duty snow blowers. Basically, if someone pays you to clean their snow, you are using the snow blower commercially and the defects warranty is shortened or void.
What snow blower features can you choose? Type, size, electric start, ease of control, type of transmission, power, and creature features like heated handles. The options you choose will largely depend on your needs, wants and budget. But one thing is crucial: make sure you get an adequate sized and type of snow blower to fit your needs. Follow my advice and do not underestimate, or over-estimate your snow blowing needs. There is nothing worse than purchasing a snow blower and realizing it won’t do the job for you. Likewise it can be a real embarrassment to find the “Tim-The-Tool Man” model won’t fit through your storage shed door.
Some of the options like, power steering, single stick controls, heated hand grips and hydrostatic transmissions, etc. may look good on paper but think about whether you actually need them. Don’t be afraid to ask questions in the comments below.
Cost: Baby Boomers: I’m sorry to tell you this but there are no “good” $500 two-stage snow blowers anymore. That last snow blower you bought for $500 now cost $650 to $1800. If you are buying a new machine for less than $600 or so you are not getting the quality you want. This especially includes the Chinese imports flooding the market.
Economy 2-stage Snowblowers: $600 to $800 depending on the width
Residential 2-stage Snowblowers: $650 to $1200 depending on the width
Heavy-Duty 2-stage Snowblowers: $850 to $1800 depending on the width
Professional 2-stage Snowblowers: $1000 to $2400 depending on the width
Commercial 2-stage Snowblowers: $1800 to $3400 depending on the width
Please note: Price is not always reflective of the quality. If you feel a snow blower is priced wrong – ask and I’ll help you decide if it’s a good value.
It always surprises me how much misinformation there is out on the web. There is even one guy out there telling everybody who will listen that all snow blowers are made in China! I asked him one day if China now owns Ohio (where MTD is made) Minnesota (where Toro is made) and Georgia (where Husqvarna is made). I haven’t heard from him since….
Two years ago Home Depot had ONE Ariens snow blower that had different tires on it than the dealer model but as of today the same model snow blowers are sold at The Home Depot and the Dealers. In other words an Ariens Deluxe 28 will be the same model number (Model 921048) and the same machine at both places. The models sold at The Home Depot do not use cheaper parts.
But….the dealers also have more snow blowers than The Home Depot. Specifically the Platinum models are dealer only. For example you can’t get the Platinum 30 SHO with the super high output impeller and 414cc engine at the Home Depot.
Almost all of the brands are this way. The large retailers only want the more popular machines and most don’t stock the really expensive machines. For example, Cub Cadet has a line of snow blowers they sell everywhere but they also have a few additional HD models that only the dealers can sell. The HD models have more powerful engines and metal chutes.
Another example, in 2015 Lowes sold only the Husqvarna 200 series but the dealers also had a heavy-duty 300 series they could sell. The 300 series had hydrostatic transmissions, cast iron impellers and big engines. (The most expensive Husqvarna Lowes sold was $1200. The dealers had more powerful and long lasting snow blowers.
Why should you trust me? I’ve lived in the Midwest for over 60 years and have used or owned just about every type of snow removal equipment there is. I also owned a landscape company on the south side of Chicago and did snow removal for home owners, apartments, businesses, and commercial properties for over 10 years.
I’ve been helping residential buyers find the best snow removal equipment here at MovingSnow since 2008. I’m used to doing my own maintenance and repair so I know what equipment will last. I’m also lazy so I know the easiest and best ways to efficiently move snow. Between this site and todaysmower.com I have helped well over 10,000,000 people find the best snow blower or riding lawn mower for them.
I’ll help you decide what type of snow removal method is best for you.
I’ll guide you through the 100’s of choices and help you make the best decision.
Moving snow can be dangerous. It can be a long way back to the house if you injured yourself moving snow. There are over 3000 finger injuries every year just from people trying to clear clogs from their gas powered snow blower. In addition there are thousands of people ending up on the emergency room because of over exertion, slips and falls. Moving snow by hand or using a snow blower can be more work than going to the gym. Working in cold temperatures and doing more work than you are used to can be a dangerous combination. Take frequent breaks. Use layers of clothing to stay warm. If you don’t regularly exercise either by physical work or at the gym be very careful and take breaks to avoid overexertion. If you are the type who has to finish a job have someone in the house set the timer on the microwave or set the alarm on your phone to remind you to take a break. People with high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes should consult a doctor before working out in the cold, using a snow blower or moving snow by hand.
Whichever snow blower you use this winter, a few basic steps will help keep you from becoming a statistic:
Never be afraid to ask for help if moving the snow is more work than you can handle. Friends, neighbors, and local agencies are great places to ask and find help. Don’t wait until it snows – ask now for the help you need next winter. Hiring a professional can be expensive, but don’t be afraid to barter with a neighbor or a friend. A dozen tomatoes from your garden now, a plate full of chocolate chip cookies then or trade for an item or other type of work can go a long way towards getting your snow moved. I’ve traded moving snow for many things over the years including dog sitting and a bushel of concord grapes.
How loud is the typical snow blower?
Electric snow blowers are quiet.
Gas powered snow blower use air cooled engines and are much louder. The snow blower itself is quiet – it’s the engine and the engine exhaust that makes the noise.
Husqvarna is the only manufacturer to post actual noise levels. Consumer Reports is the only organization that tests noise levels but they don’t post the actual data. Currently, they recommend hearing protection for all the gas engine snow blowers they have tested.
The 2016 snow blowers in general are quieter than ones made 5 years ago. For example, the Craftsman 28″ 243cc Dual Stage Snowthrower with Quiet Engine is 45% quieter than the previous model. Husqvarna and Toro also have models with quieter exhaust systems than older models.
In general – If you are concerned about your hearing you should use hearing protection when using all gas powered snow blowers.
You can spend as little as $20 for a snow shovel and well over $2,500 for a heavy-duty gas powered snow blower. The type of snow equipment you buy depends on the size of the area you need clear, the types of snow you get and how large the area you need to clear. You should also take into consideration the size of your doorways on your garage or shed and the space available to store it when not in use.
Here are some common ways to move snow.
A good 20 to 30 dollar snow shovel is designed to easily move snow. It is the most important item in your snow fighting toolkit and even if you hire someone to clear your snow I suggest owning a good one yourself. The snow shovels I will show you are built of a lightweight material like plastic or aluminum and are slippery so the snow doesn’t stick. In the Snow Shovel Guide we will go through all the manual ways to move snow and find the best choice for you. For example, I prefer one like the one pictured that is about 18 inches wide and has a longer handle with a grip at the end. This shovel allows me to throw the snow without bending. If the snow is light and fluffy I can also push large amounts because it rolls the snow forward much like a snowplow and the “D handle” on the end let’s me get a good push. Snow shovels range in width from 16 to 30 inches.
The biggest disadvantages to a snow shovel is the labor involved and the fact that you can only move the snow away from your door or driveway as far as you can throw it.
If you are under doctor’s orders not to shovel snow but you still need to get a small amount of sidewalk or driveway cleared an electric snow shovel or power shovel may be just what you need. Electric Snow Shovels are designed for small areas like steps, porches and small decks. Most electric snow shovels use an extension cord and are about 12 to 14 inches wide. They only take about 4 inches or less but are light enough so you can pick them up and use them like a snow shovel for cutting down larger drifts.
The cordless snow shovel has finally come of age. New Lithium power shovels will run 20-40 minutes on a charge.
The biggest disadvantage to an electric snow shovel is it only throws the snow a few feet, basically no farther than you can throw it with a shovel. If you live in an area that gets feet of snow instead inches this will not work for you.
Single-stage electrics. An electric snow thrower is the next step up from the power shovel. If the area you need to clear is less than 100 feet from your house. If you only get a little snow each year, and you don’t have to throw it more than a few feet off your sidewalk or driveway the electric snow thrower may work for you. About the size of a walk-behind mower, single-stage electrics are also the lightest, smallest, quietest, and easiest to handle. Their electric motor frees you from fueling and engine maintenance. The most common is corded electric but lithium battery – cordless models are now available through most home centers. My friend in St Louis has a 10 by 30 foot driveway, and an 8 by 16 foot deck. An electric snow thrower is perfect for him.
Two disadvantages to using electric snow throwers. First corded models use 110v so you have to drag a 12 gauge extension cord along with you as you are moving snow. Second, both the corded and cordless models only throw snow 15 feet or less. Last year it snowed early and didn’t melt so homeowners with electric snow throwers had piles of snow by March. My neighbor eventually had to hire a skid-steer to move his piles of snow because his snow thrower couldn’t throw the snow over the mounds that built up.
These small snow blowers don’t have driven wheels and don’t pull themselves through the snow. You have to push the snow thrower through the snow like a shovel. They’re best for short, level driveways, decks, and walks with less than four inches of snow. They don’t work on gravel driveways or your lawn. The biggest disadvantage is they are small and their 11- to 18-inch swaths typically mean clearing your snow takes a while. Because you have to push them through the snow they don’t work on steep slopes. And, of course, the corded models are limited to 100 feet or less from a 11o volt outlet.
A single stage gas snow thrower is the fastest way to clear up to 6 inches of snow from a paved surface. In fact many of us who own large two-stage snow blowers will also have one of these for the lighter snows. These 18-to-22 inch snow throwers are more powerful than electric versions and will clean packed snow and snow that has been driven on off your driveway or sidewalk. They are a good choice for level, mid sized paved driveways and side walks with typical snow falls of less than eight inches. Single stage gas snow throwers are very simple to operate. Most weigh less than 70 lbs and very easy to handle and push around. They have few moving parts so they are easy to maintain . They don’t have complicated controls and transmissions. They use the rubber coated front auger to both throw the snow and pull you along. Any quality machine now comes with electric start so they are easy to start. They take up about as much storage space as a push lawn mower. Today’s gas powered single stage snow throwers use a four-stroke engine so they require about as much regular maintenance as your gas push mower. No mixing of oil and gas is required.
If you have a paved one car driveway that is only one or two car lengths long, you don’t get snows deeper than 6-10 inches, and you don’t have to blow the snow more than 20 feet this may be the right snow thrower for you. This style of snowblower is also popular for cleaning off decks and patios because it is light enough to drag up steps and through the house. Most of these are designed to use the auger to pull you forward through the snow
Disadvantages: People tend to buy these snow throwers because they cost less than the larger two-stage but they really need a larger machine. They only throw snow 15 to 20 feet and efficiently only clear 6 inches or less at a time. For example, if the weather center forecasts more than 6 inches of snow at once you need to plan to go out in the middle of the snow storm and clear snow. If the forecast is for 12 inches or more you will have to come back a second or third time and clear the drive after the snow ends. If the snow is very wet sometimes a single stage snow thrower will only throw it 3 to 10 feet. Because the spinning front auger contacts the ground they won’t work on gravel driveways or your lawn. The spinning auger will also scratch your deck. Because they don’t use a transmission to drive the wheels their auger provides only a small amount of pulling power going uphill, and they tend to pull sideways on sloped surfaces.
Cost: Gas Powered Single Stage Snow Throwers cost anywhere from $350 to $750. Budget $500 to $650 for a quality machine that will last more than a year or two.
Be very careful buying an used machine. Over the years the front auger will wear out and the replacement part can easily cost more than you paid for the used machine. Many homeowners don’t use stabilized gas when storing the snow blower so assume the carburetor on a used machine is gummed up or corroded if it won’t start. To have a repair center replace the carburetor can cost over $250. Most of the single stage gas machines built before 2008 used two-cycle engines and you have to use a smokey, smelly oil-gas mix to run them.
Like single-stage gas snow blowers, two-stage models begin by using a front auger to pick up the snow. But that is where the similarity ends. The front auger on a two-stage then chews up the snow into small chunks and throws it into a high speed impeller (It looks like a heavy duty fan). This impeller then throws the snow out the top mounted chute. This allows a two-stage snow blower to throw snow much farther than a single stage snow thrower. Because the front auger throws the snow into this “second stage” and that fan then throws the snow is why this type of snow blower is called two-stage.
Three-stage gas snowblowers – Three stage snow blowers work like a two-stage snow blower and have an additional front or top auger to break heavy snow up into smaller particles. Cub Cadet three-stage snow blowers adds a front screw that is advertised to throw the snow into the impeller quicker allowing it to have more snow moving capacity than similarly sized two-stage snow blowers.
Two-stage machines use a multi-speed transmission to propel the wheels. This allows you to power the machine into deep, heavy snow and large wind packed snow drifts easily. Because they are self-powered they also work on slopes, gravel driveways and turf. On the downside, they’re relatively heavy and expensive, and can take up as much storage space as a lawn tractor. Their gas engine also requires regular maintenance.
If you live north of Interstate 80 this type of snow removal should be your first choice.
If properly maintained most will last you many years so they are always a good investment. Quality units will handle typical 6 to 12 inch snows easily and even handle that 22 inch’er the east coast seems to get at least once a year. They are powerful enough to clean the snowdrift that the city snowplow leaves at the end of your driveway. Depending on the water content of the snow this type of machine will throw snow 15 to 50 feet so you don’t have to be concerned about getting too high of banks close to your driveway. This type of snowblower uses a separate multi-speed transmission to push the unit through the snow.
One of the best advantages of this type of snow thrower is the front scraper bar can be raised off the ground so you can easily clean a gravel driveway without throwing rocks or clean an area off your lawn for your dogs.
Single Stage Snow Throwers:
Auger Propelled – Single stage snow throwers can pull themselves along if you lift up on the handle and let the front auger (rubber paddles) touch the ground. The wheels do not push/pull the snow blower through the snow.
CVT – One new single stage snow thrower uses a CVT transmission to drive the wheels and is designed to automatically go forward as fast as you walk.
Two-Stage Snow Blowers:
Single Speed – A single speed gearbox drive the rear wheels and pushes the snow blower. This is found ONLY on the most inexpensive snow blowers. Trust me – it’s either too fast or too slow.
Friction Disk – This is the most common type of transmission used on todays snow blowers. I won’t go into how they work here but they are very reliable and keep down the cost of your new snow blower. The brands usually list these as 5 or 6 speed and usually have 6 speeds forward and 2 in reverse.
CVT – Continuously Variable Transmission. CVT transmissions are sealed, take no training to use and have been perfected to the point that it’s just a matter of time before they replace Friction Disk transmissions. The Toro Personal Pace is a CVT.
HydroStatic – Hydro’s are the heavy duty transmission. Like CVT’s they are continuously variable and easy to use. You will only find these in the high-end snow blowers.
Geared – I list this just to tell you no one uses a geared transmission for walk-behind snow blowers.
What type of propulsion is best for hilly terrain?
Track Drive 2-stage snow blowers have a lot more traction than most of the wheeled counterparts. This is because they have a larger contact surface with the ground compared to wheels. A good example of a tracked machine is the Husqvarna Track-Drive Snow Thrower – 414cc Engine, Model# ST330T
If you have a sloped drive but don’t want a tracked snow blower look for a snow blower with large, tall wheels. The Toro Snow Removal Power Max HD 1028 28 in. OHXE Two-Stage Gas Snow Blower 38802 is a good example of a snow blower with large, tall tires.
What is a single stage snow blower?
With a single-stage snow blower, the auger (the rubber paddles you see in front of the blower) grabs the snow and then directly throws it out a discharge chute. With most single stage snow throwers the auger contacts with the surface you are clearing so it should only be used on a paved surface. It will throw gravel, rocks, sticks and other items you can’t see in the snow.
Single-stage snow throwers are ideal for smaller paved sidewalks, patios and short driveways. They are about as easy to use as your gas push mower, but they are only suitable if you get 8 inches or less of snow. If you live north of Interstate 80 consider a 2-stage snow blower instead. They handle slush better than the larger 2-stage snow blowers. When moving 2-4 inches of snow they are faster than a 2-stage snow blower so many homeowners have both a 2-stage snow blower for the normal snows and a single stage for the light stuff.
They typically come in 20-24 inch widths.
Home Depot Lists The New Toro SnowMaster As A 2-stage – Is It?
No, it is a single stage.

What is a two stage snow blower?
A 2-stage snow blower uses two components to collect the snow and then throw it out of the machine. The front auger grabs the snow and then pushes it to the center of the front housing. It is spinning fast enough that it throws the snow out the back into a fan behind it. This fan, called the impeller grabs the snow and throws it out the top chute. The impeller spins about 10 times faster than the front auger so the snow is thrown faster and farther away than a single stage snow thrower. 2-stage snow blowers typically can handle deep snow and throw it 30 to 50 feet away from your driveway.
More expensive 2-stage snow throwers use larger impellers, faster impeller speed, and/or larger engines to increase the capacity of the snow blower so you can move heavy, deep snow faster than the less expensive machines.
The auger on a two-stage thrower does not contact the surface so it can be used over gravel or dirt.
Is a 3-stage snow blower better than a 2-stage?
In the last few years manufacturers have realized that if they put larger engine on snow blowers that they can move a lot more snow than they could with the old 5, 8 and 10 horse Tecumseh engines.
But they also realized that the auger and impellers they were currently using also limited how much snow a 2-stage snow blower could handle. So each manufacturer has developed a refined system to get more snow into the machine. I’ll quickly go through the changes including 3-stage that have increased the capacity of the heavy-duty machines.
But first – Two terms you need to know
Ribbon auger – The open flight auger system mixes air with the snow to prevent heavy, wet snow from clogging the discharge chute. This system is limited mainly by engine size and impeller speed.
Closed flight auger -closed flight, closely spaced front auger meters the snow into the impeller. This system is limited mainly by flight spacing.
Toro PowerMax HD – Toro uses an open flight front auger and a high speed impeller. Toro has increased the capacity of the HD with new engines and the Power Max® Anti-Clogging System. (ACS)
Ariens Deluxe/Platinum SHO – Ariens has increased the engine size, increased the impeller speed and changed the design of the impeller to increase the capacity.
Husqvarna 300 Series – Husqvarna has switched from a closed flight front auger to an open flight and went from a 3 blade impeller to a 4 blade cast iron design. They also increased the engine size.
MTD/Cub Cadet/Troy-Bilt/Craftsman 3-stage – MTD has kept the closed flight front auger but has added a center auger that forces the snow into the impeller faster than standard closed flight system.
They also increased the engine size to handle the additional snow the 3rd stage pushes into the machine.
So – is a three stage snow blower better than a two stage? Each manufacturer has an improved the way to get more snow into and through these new high horse power snow blowers. They will all get the job done faster than a typical 10 year old residential machine. The 3-stage system is just one way of doing it but not necessarily a better way.
Residential two stage snow throwers come in many widths ranging from 24 to 30 inches.
20-22 inch – One manufacturer still makes a 20 and one a 22. All the rest now only make 24 inch and larger.
24 inch – This is a common size for your 2 car, 70 foot or smaller residential driveway.
26 inch – Get done a little faster.
27-28 inch. Good for 2-3 cars wide – up to 120-150 feet long. Many brands make high horsepower snow blowers in this size for areas that get heavy snow.
29-30 inch. Good for larger driveways up to 200-250 feet long. Will clear sidewalks in one pass.
32-34 inch. Snow blowers in this size get hard to handle and only work well on flat areas like parking lots.
Engines are sized for the snow blower and a few brands also offer high powered snow blowers for those of you who live in the “snow belt” areas like Buffalo, NY. 24 inch is the most common size and will easily take care of a 16 by 60 foot driveway. I’ll help you decide on the best size and quality you need for your area of the country.
There are two main questions that will get you in the ball park for figuring out the size of a two-stage snow blower you need.
Generally accepted suggestions for the general size you need includes the sidewalks in front of your home.
24 inch. Two car driveways 20 to 60 feet long
26 inch. Two car driveways 30 to 80 feet long. A 26 inch will save you about 15% in time over a 24 inch.
27-28 inch. Two car driveways 30 to 150 feet long. A three car driveway 100 foot long would be the same size.
30 inch. 30-200 feet. If your driveway is longer than 200 feet consider a tractor mounted snow blower.
32-38 inch. Large, flat, open areas like parking lots. 32 inch is about as wide as you want to go if you have residential sidewalks to clean.
Minimum engine size (in cc’s) for the size of the snow blower and the amount of snow you typically get per snow fall.
24-26 inch. 208cc for areas of the country that get up to 70 inches per year of snow. 250cc for “snow belt” that average more than 70 inches.
27-28 inch. 250cc for areas of the country that get up to 70 inches per year of snow. 300cc for “snow belt” that average more than 70 inches.
30-33 inch. 290cc for areas of the country that get up to 70 inches per year of snow. 350cc for “snow belt” that average more than 70 inches.
What extra features are really useful on a 2-3 stage snow blower?
Electric Start – If you have problems starting a lawn mower I strongly suggest getting a model with electric start. You may not need it most of the time but it is so handy if it’s really cold out or your gas is not fresh. This is pretty much standard now-days. Only the cheapest models and on Honda 2-stage snow blowers is it an option that you have to check for.
Remote Chute – A remote chute control is a lever or crank up near the handles that allows you to turn the discharge chute without having to stop the snow blower, walk around to the side, and then move the chute. This allows you to put the snow where you want it. This is now standard on all but the cheapest snow blowers.
Remote Deflector – The deflector controls how far the snow is thrown and a remote deflector can be very handy if the wind is blowing the snow back into your face. It’s also handy to direct snow away from the side of your house or so it doesn’t blow over into your neighbor’s newly cleaned driveway. All snow blowers over $700 now have a remote deflector.
Single Hand Control – This feature allows you to take one hand off the handlebars and have the snow blower still continue to move forward and throw snow. This allows you to move the remote chute or deflector without stopping the snow blower. It saves time. This is now standard on all but the cheapest snow blowers.
Power Steering – If you have a bad back. If you can’t lift more than 30 lbs. If you are small. If you have balance problems power steering is a great feature. Basically if you can walk behind a snow blower you can use one with power steering. The steering is controlled using small triggers under the handles or it’s done automatically (no levers) on Ariens Deluxe/Platinum and Toro SnowMaster snow blowers. Models with power steering typically start around $850.
Headlight – Headlights help you see in the middle of the night or early morning. Some models like the Husqvarna ST224P have wrap-around lighting that doesn’t let the discharge chute get in the way.
Heated Handgrips – If you clear your drive in any weather – no matter how cold it gets heated hand grips can help you stay out working longer. Heated handgrips don’t get hot – they just warm so your hands won’t start to sweat inside your gloves.
Electric Chute and Deflector Controls – A few models like the Craftsman 30 In 357cc Dual-Stage Snowblower w/ EZ Steer Electric 4-Way Chute Control have a small joystick right by your thumb to control the chute and deflector. This is very convenient and built to last. A few other models like the new HondaHSS724AW use a huge joystick in the center of the operator’s console and are not that convenient.
Tire Chains – Years ago snow blowers used lawn mower tires and to get enough traction tire chains were wrapped around the tire. They worked great but tore up your blacktop and left brown rust marks on your cement. Today deep, aggressive tires are made just for snow blowers so tire chains are not used very often.
There are 5 ways:
Solid Axle – With a solid axle both wheels turn all the time so you have to “skid” the snowblower around the turns. You will find this on the economy models. This type of steering will be hard to use for smaller people.
Pin Lock – This is also a solid axle but you can remove a pin from one wheel to make it easier to turn. This works for light snow but you lose half your traction. Put the pin back in if you need the traction and it then steers like a solid axle.
Trigger Steering – Commonly called power steering. There is a small trigger under each handle that you pull when you want to turn. The wheels/axle are locked until you pull the trigger so you always have the maximum traction – yet you can turn the snow blower easily. If you have a bad back or have a hard time controlling a snow blower this is a preferred solution.
Auto-Turn – These snow blowers have a locking differential that automatically releases when you turn. It gives you maximum traction yet is very easy to turn. No triggers or lever to pull. If you have a bad back or have a hard time controlling a snow blower this is a preferred solution.
Locking Differential – The Auto-Turn has replaced this method but there are a few snow blowers left than use one lever on the handle to release the locked differential. These can be hard to turn.
What’s the difference between “Power Steering” and “Auto Turn”? Which one is easiest to use?
Models with power steering use triggers under the handle to steer. When you want to turn left just pull up on the trigger under the left handle and you go that way. This type of steering has been around for years and the Cub Cadet, Toro, Craftsman and Husqvarna trigger power steering will never give you problems. If you have a very long driveway you may like the trigger steering best because the snow blower will go in a straight line until you tell it to turn.
The Ariens Auto-Turn doesn’t use triggers. It automatically releases a locked differential inside the transmission when you want to make a turn. It’s an extremely simple system and like the power steering is built to last. Auto-Turn is very easy to use and requires no learning curve. There are no extra levers or triggers to use. It works really well for areas that require lots of turning and maneuvering.
Toro is using the Auto-Turn on the SnowMaster and other units and they call it Automatic Steering. They have coupled it with their Personal Pace drive and it works so well that you don’t even know it is there. This system is as easy to use as your push mower. It gives you traction from both wheels when going in a straight line and automatically releases one wheel when you make a turn or zero-turn.
Ariens, Craftsman, Cub Cadet, Honda, Husqvarna, Poulan Pro, Remington, Simplicity, Snapper, Sno-Tek, Toro, Troy Bilt, Yard Machines. Any other name is most likely a Chinese Import.

Do I need to use fuel stabilizer in my gas snow blower?
Yes,
I use fuel stabilizer in all my small gas engines. I actually put it in my storage container when I go buy fuel. Why? because I never actually know how long my small engines will sit between run times. This is especially true with snow blowers because it may snow tomorrow or it may be a month before I use it again.
Because I always use fuel stabilizer I never have to worry about bad gas or moisture in the fuel wrecking my carb.
My questions to you is. Do you spend an extra 20 cents or so per gallon of gas for fuel stabilizer or do you spend $80 to $250 to replace a carb because of bad fuel?
Can I use ethanol fuel – gas in my snow blower?
Yes,
You can use 10% or less ethanol fuels in all snow blowers manufactured after 2009.
Do NOT use fuels labeled E15 or E85. Some states now offer a higher percentage blend at the same pump where you get the E10 and non-ethanol fuels. This new fuel – E15 – will wreck your snow blower and lawn & garden engine. In other words – todays snow blower engines are designed to run on 87 octane 10% ethanal fuels.
Yes, you may run ethanol-free or premium fuel.
I strongly suggest you run fuel stabilizer in any fuel you run in your snow blower! When you go buy fuel at the gas station put the stabilizer right in the storage container. That way you will always have treated fuel that will last more than a few weeks.
Should I lubricate my snow blower?
In general todays snow blowers use maintenance free sealed bearings and don’t need grease but read the maintenance section in your operator’s manual to be sure.
There are a few snow blowers that have a grease fitting or two for the rear axle and transmission bearings.
In the spring I usually clean the snow blower before I put it away and any parts inside auger and impeller area that have the paint worn away I spray with a lithium grease to protect them from rust.
Change the oil in the spring so the snow blower engine sits for the summer with fresh oil.
Read your operator’s manual. It will tell you what parts need to be lubricated.
Can I add an electric starter to my gas snow blower?
In general it will be cheaper to buy a new replacement engine than it would be to add all the parts needed for an electric starter.
Plus the new engine will be quieter and more fuel efficient.
A new Briggs & Stratton 205cc, LCT Stormforce, or PowerMore engine with electric start are around $250 to $300. The parts and labor to change over your old Tecumseh to electric start will be more than that.
The only exception is if your old engine has two output shafts. A replacement engine is very expensive and the starter kit to add electric start is no longer available. In the case – buy a new snow blower.
Can I clean chunks of ice with the snow blower?
If you can step on the ice and break it up with your foot it may go through the snow blower.
I don’t recommend trying to throw pieces that are solid or very tough or larger than a tennis ball. At the very least you will break shear pins. At the worse you will break augers, impellers and gearboxes. I have seen impellers bent from ice and other hard objects.

Ariens Path Pro 938033
About 5 years ago commercial operators asked Ariens to make a commercial grade single stage snow thrower. These contractors wanted a single stage snow thrower that would clean a sidewalk well, was easy to service and rugged enough to throw around in the back of a snow plow truck. Ariens introduced these models in 2014 and they have proven to be very good machines. The reviews on Home Depot give them a solid 4.8 out of 5 stars. You can see a few videos I made here: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheToolboxhero/videos. These models are available at your local dealer and Home Depot.

Ariens SnoTek 920402
Ariens is known for their heavy-duty snow blowers but they also have one 24 inch economy and two 20/24 inch compact machines. These three snow blowers are designed for people who need a 2-stage machine but don’t regularly get heavy, deep, blizzard snows. These machines work well for single and 2 car driveways. In fact , I could easily live with one of these for my 16 by 60 cement driveway and the patch of grass I need to clear for my dogs.
If you don’t like my “best value” picks this year because of the company that sells it or the service these are great alternative snow blowers. They are sold at Home Depot and your local Ariens dealer.

Introducing EZ-Launch™ EFI from Ariens — the industry’s first and only engine that starts fast, saves fuel and changes the way you move snow.
The Ariens AX EZ-Launch ™ EFI engine needs only two simple steps to start, versus six steps with a traditional carbureted engine. All you need to do is turn the key and pull the recoil cord (or use the electric start). The engine uses an electronic governor, which virtually eliminates engine rpm dips and delivers consistent snow throwing performance. The combination of electronic fuel injection and the e-governor also work together to use less fuel and give you an ultra-quiet idle than traditional engine models.
ARIENS EZ-Launch EFI Engine
Because the system is electronic, it automatically adjusts to the environment and can start in extreme weather, at high or low altitude and can tackle any type of snow. With traditional engines, the machine can lose more than 10 percent of its power when encountering drifts or wet, heavy snow. However, the Ariens AX EZ-Launch EFI engine controls its speed automatically, and it won’t slow down when it encounters large piles of snow.
The Ariens AX EZ-Launch EFI engine can be run in different modes: from full power to efficiency modes. While in efficiency mode, the engine runs quieter, uses less fuel and runs at a slightly lower speed, making it a good option for early morning hours when others are sleeping. The power mode increases the engine’s output and provides the unit with more power to get through tough jobs.
The Ariens EFI system is also completely sealed, helping to significantly reduce maintenance costs. The system will not require adjusting since it is sealed, as gas won’t deteriorate if left in the engine. This allows you to store your machine without worrying about fuel system problems.
For 2016, Ariens is offering the EFI engine on two models, the Deluxe 30 and the Platinum 24 SHO. Models start at a promotional price of $1,699 USD, and will be available in late October 2016 at authorized Ariens dealers and Home Depot stores in the United States and Canada. Ariens dealers will exclusively carry the Platinum 24 SHO EFI model. The units come backed with a three-year consumer warranty. For more information visit http://www.ariens.com/en-us/snow-blowers/efi.
Ariens Deluxe 921046
Ariens Deluxe snow blowers are heavy-duty, yet affordable 2-stage snow blowers. They are capable of handling snow falls in most areas of the U.S. They consistently throw all types of snow farther than the other brands in this price range. The Deluxe 28 SHO is one of my favorite overall snow blowers.
All of the Deluxe and Deluxe SHO 2-stage snow blowers are getting a small but very significant upgrade. Because of this upgrade all the model numbers are changing for this fall. Ariens Professional. Photo Stolen From Jacks Small Engines
Ariens Professional snow blowers are true commercial machines. In my opinion they are the most heavy-duty walk-behind snow blowers available on the U.S. market below $5000. They will handle any snow and throw most snow 60 feet. If your current snow blower is less than 5 years old and already wore out, if your driveway is over 200 feet long, this is the best choice for a long lasting snow blower.
The biggest change to these snow blowers is the new heavy-duty handle. There is no “give” to the handles and they won’t bend, break or crack over time.
Throws snow up to 60 feet and up to 102 tons per hour. (I notice that the specs for the Pro 32 and Pro 36 actually out-perform the $7999 Honda HS1336iAS!)

The post 2016 Ariens Snow Blowers – What’s New – and Exciting! appeared first on MovingSnow.com.
This is a complete list of what Craftsman is offering for gas snow blowers for 2016. Besides your favorite, Craftsman is introducing 4 snow blowers. A new single stage, two brand new heavy-duty 2-stage machines and they are bringing back an old 28 inch favorite. I’m really excited about the heavy-duty models. I’ll go over each one in the list below,
Why The Brand: Craftsman has been selling residential snow blowers from the beginning. Overall, they sell the best value machines. That means they are not the cheapest on the market but are a fair value. That also means that some of the other brands will have snow blower that are more heavy-duty (and more expensive) but as a homeowner Craftsman snow blowers will give you your money’s worth and last for years. When sized to the amount of snow you get and the area you have to clear you can always feel good that you made the right decision in purchasing a Craftsman. Craftsman does not make a commercial snow blower even though they have a Craftsman Pro series. They only market to residential owners and have a size that will fit just about any driveway.
Sales: Craftsman snow blowers are sold online at Sears.com/Snow Removal Equipment, and at physical locations including the Full-line Sears Stores (Malls), at the Sears Hometown Stores, Sears Outlet Stores and Sears Hardware Stores. In addition, certain models are sold through ACE hardware.
Sears is intent on becoming one of the best online stores so the best deals and the best sale prices are always available through Sears.com/Snow Removal Equipment. You can order online and pick up your new snow blower at your local store. Most Craftsman snow blowers are also eligible for free delivery.
Parts: Craftsman has one of the largest parts networks in the industry and parts are always available online through Sears PartsDirect. Parts are available to order anytime – 24/7 – through the Sears PartsDirect website. All you need to is the model number of your snow blower from the nameplate located on the frame of the machine. Enter that model number into the box on Sears PartsDirect and parts diagrams pop up. You can click and order the part right there. New! Did you know you can purchase online get free in store pickup at Sears Parts Direct? It’s quick and easy to do. Choose your item and choose your store, that’s it! Sears PartsDirect
Service: Craftsman has a well established parts and repair network. The unique feature of their network is for most snow handling equipment they will come right to your home for repairs and normal maintenance. You never have to worry about having to take you snow blower somewhere to get it fixed. Just call 1-800-4MY-HOME to set up an appointment.
The big red elephant in the room: Is Sears going out of business? I’m not privy to what is going on behind the closed doors of the Sears Corporate Boardroom but I will say the news media has been trying to convince you that Sears will “be out of business” by the end of the year since the 1990’s. The news media knows that they can sell at lot more “newspapers” with doom and gloom than they can with feel good articles so they will always continue to find an “open wound” and pour salt in it. In general, they love to watch something fail. I know, “the sky is falling” sells a lot more newspapers or likes on Facebook but it does not help when you are trying to decide which snow blower you want to have in your garage for the next 20 years. That said, I have watched Sears closely for the last 16 years and Craftsman equipment, Craftsman Parts and Sears Repair Services are just as available as it was in 2000. Craftsman, Sears Parts, and Sears Repair are all separate from the mall stores so even if Sears does close your local store at the mall, parts and service are still available with just a phone call or through sears.com. The only thing I’ve noticed is that Sears Repair is having the same difficulty as everyone else is having in finding and keeping qualified techs. Because of that some areas of the country are experiencing 2-3 week repairs (is that any different than your local dealer?)
Owner Reviews: Depending on the model, Craftsman Snow Throwers averages 4 to 4.5 of of 5 stars. The biggest complaint/issue continues to be the general lack of knowledge that owners have about using fresh fuel and storing gas engines with fuel stabilizer in the tanks. This is an industry problem – not just a problem with Craftsman. If you are not using a sealed gas can and fuel stabilizer you are just asking for problems even on brand new machines.
All Craftsman gas engine snow throwers have a 4-cycle engine. All 2-stage and 3-stage snow throwers have a throttle but do not have a fuel shut-off valve. Please use a fuel stabilizer when storing the snow blower with fuel in it.
My goal is to help you find the right snow blower for you. You can get the best deal but if it is on the wrong snow blower it’s a lose/lose for both you and the company you purchased it from. Before I get to the list I would like to remind you about the snow blower facts article that will help you decide on the right type and size snow blower for you. The article will answer most of your questions about what size or type of snow blower you need for your property. Check out the FAQS page for questions like “How large of snow blower do I need?”
Note: Any model numbers you see in stores or online that do not match this list are discontinued models. Craftsman typically does not sell off discontinued models in the spring but waits until the next fall. In particular there are some previous year 33 and 45 inch models available right now.
Please Note: If a snow thrower is listed on sears.com I will give you a link to buy. I do have a relationship with Sears where I make a small commission if you buy through this site.
So, here is the list of the 2016 Craftsman snow blowers. You may ask any questions about these models in the comments section at the end.
Craftsman offers three single stage gas snow throwers this year. Remember, single stage snow throwers only work on hard surfaces like a black top driveway or cement sidewalk. They do work well if you have people who walk on the snow before you clean because the front rubber auger actually touches the ground. No matter what the manufacture states a single paddle snow thrower will only handle about 6 inches of snow at a time. If you get more snow than that you will have to go out in the middle of the storm and clear snow. They also don’t work well on that frozen pile of snow the snow plow truck left you about 10 pm last night. It will clear it OK if the pile has not froze but if it has froze solid take a snow shovel with you to break up the snow so the snow thrower can move it for you.
The 11683 is a low powered, inexpensive snow thrower that I only recommend for people who get very little snow every year. In other words, if you can’t remember the last time you got 6 inches of snow this machine may be a good choice. If you buy it just because it’s the cheapest snow thrower you will complain about it being under powered and a bad choice for you. This snow thrower does not have electric start
All of the other snow throwers that Craftsman offers have electric start.
The 88780. Many of us in the Midwest have two snow throwers – a heavy duty 2-stage for the blizzards and a general purpose single stage for the 4 inch and less snow falls. This is a great choice for the second snow thrower. If you feel that a single stage snow thrower is all that you need the 88780 is a good choice. The 179 cc engine has plenty of power for all but the wettest snow and will realistically throw it off your 2 car wide driveway.
The 88782. If you get a lot of 2 to 6 inch’ers and an occasional 8-10 inch snow the 88782 may be a good choice for you. The extra power of the 208 cc engine will quickly cut through heavy, wet snow and throw it clear of your 2 car driveway. It’s easier to use that other single stage snow throwers because the remote chute lets change the throwing direction without stopping the snow thrower and moving around to the side of the machine to move a lever. The new LED light is bright and will help you see out at the end of your driveway in the middle of the night.

The 88172. Do you have an older 5 HP, 24 inch Craftsman snow blower? This is the exact replacement. Short, plastic chute, good engine, no single-hand controls. If you have a small one or two car driveway and you don’t get a lot of snow this can be a good choice. Again, if you buy this because it’s cheap – you won’t be happy, but if you know what this snow blower’s capabilities are it may be a good machine for you.
The 88173. This snow blower continues to be one the best overall values for 2-stage snow blowers. The 208 cc engine has plenty of power. The long chute holds the snow better so it doesn’t blow back in your face so often. It’s listed as a compact which means it is a good residential machine if you average 60 inches of snow or less a year. In other words, I highly recommend it for Chicago but not for Boston. It will work well for New Jersey or Long Island but not for Buffalo. Be warned, it throws snow well but it does not have some of the more expensive “creature features” that you may want. It does not have power steering, a headlight or remote deflector control. It does have poly skid shoes that won’t scratch your pavement and single hand control. Single hand control lets you rotate the chute or shift the gear selector while still moving.
Want this snow blower but really need a light? This light is as bright as the dash mounted variety one and you can move it so the chute is not in the way! Craftsman Snow Thrower/Mower Light

Many people complain that snow blower engines are too noisy. If you want an excellent 2-stage snow thrower but would like it to be quieter than your neighbor’s these snow blowers are the best choice.
Note: The written item description for these three snow blowers on Sears.com can be a little deceiving. It’s not wrong and they are not lying but I want to clarify the details before you buy one of these snow blowers. The engines are up to 45% quieter than a normal 208 or 243 cc engine. They also have the same horsepower as the normal engines. BUT! These snow blowers are a little under powered for their size clearing heavy snow. That said, the 26 inch machines have had a 208 cc engine on them for years and they have always been under powered for many people. So I only recommend these three snow blowers if you want a quiet engine and you live in an area of the country that gets less than 60 inches of snow a year. These snow blowers will work well for the 2 to 10 inch snows, but 14-18 inch snows and deep drifts will take you a longer time to clear with these machines. They are good, dependable snow blowers but under powered for areas of the country that get more than 60 inches of snow a year.
The 88972. This snow blower is a good value but does not have power steering and a 4-way chute control. If you want a larger width than popular Craftsman 88173 and are a robust, healthy person this is a good choice.
The 88694. This snow blower is on of the easiest snow blowers to use. If your spouse needs to move snow but doesn’t like machinery this is one of the best choices. If your 125 lb mom needs a new snow blower and she has a gravel driveway or gets 12-20 inch drifts this is the best choice. And yes, it’s quiet. About 45% quieter than her old one. This snow blower is balanced well so it’s easy to maneuver, has good traction and power steering. Basically, if you can walk and use both hands – you can use this machine.
The 88394. This snow blower is just a little larger and more powerful than the 26 inch 88694. It’s still very easy to use and I suggest it a lot for people who average 50 inches or less snow a year but have a larger driveway, a gravel drive to clear, or want to clean a spot on the lawn for the dogs.

Craftsman has a snow blower for everyone and they use 4 paint schemes to make that easy for you to understand. Gray is good, Red is better, Black is best and Black/Yellow is Pro. The Black series has all the dependable features you want without the high price. If you live in the U.S. and average 100 inches or less a year, these snow blowers will do the job – well.
These snow blowers have been around for quite a while. They have had incremental improvements over the years but in general they have been and continue to be some of the best value snow blowers on the market. When you think about Craftsman and the good-old-days and smile, these are the snow blowers that made you smile. There are other machines that blow snow faster, are bigger, are heavier and a lot more expensive but these snow blowers are just dependable and easy to use.
These two snow blowers are very easy to use for any individual under 6 ft 2 in and over 110 lbs. You drive them and don’t need to “man-handle” them to clear your driveway or sidewalks. They have tall tires for more traction and are balanced well.
If I rated the 250 plus snow blowers on the market, these two machines would be in the top 10 for value, ease of use and dependability.
The 88395. This snow blower is 28 inches and uses a 277 cc engine. It will handle areas of the country that get 100 inches or less very well. This is a good size for a 2-car wide 100 ft long driveway.
The 88396. 30 inches and 357 cc engine. I’ve used this snow blower on 14 inches of heavy snow and the engine has more than enough power. One of the features I really like about this machine is the electric joystick chute control. This control is proven “bulletproof” and the easiest chute control on the market. No need to move your hand when you have to change the throwing direction. The control is right by your right thumb. This is one of the larger snow blowers on the market and will handle 120 inch average snowfalls well.

The new high-capacity Craftsman Pro snow blowers are a big deal. Why? The old models had been around for many years. They were expensive, heavy and very out-dated. The old 33 inch model was an OK machine but the 45 inch – was just worthless. I could go on but you get the picture.
The new models are a complete redesign.
Please Note: These snow blowers have not been rated by any of the other review sites. I will not get a chance to use one until I get some snow and that’s usually around December. But, I’ve been using and studying the design of snow blowers long enough that I will be able to give you an honest opinion of their capacity soon. I’ll write a separate review. Hint: So far I like them better than the red, tracked snow blowers that cost twice as much

3-Stage snow blowers work well on deep, medium to light snow. 6 inches or better is ideal. Under those circumstances these snow blowers are high-powered, high-capacity machines that will move up to 50% more snow than the red Craftsman snow blowers. If I lived in a snow belt like Hammond, IN or Buffalo, NY these would be a great choice.
Because some of the review sites are using damp sawdust to test snow blowers many of these review sites are rating these snow blowers as the best. They do work better than most under certain conditions. Are these the best for you? Please be aware if you get a lot of 2-4 inch heavy, wet snows these units tend to splatter snow out the front. They are a high-capacity snow blower but not a “clean” snow blower. If you get a lot of snow that freezes into hard drifts quickly these snow blowers tend to break shear pins on that type of snow. You will need to take half-passes or less to clean solid, frozen snow.
The 88870. 24 inch, 277 cc. Over-the-top power in a small unit. If you have a small driveway but need to throw the snow a long distance this is a great choice.
The 88874. 28 inch, 357 cc. Works well for a 2-3 car wide driveway 100-150 foot long.

I normally don’t write an article on all the Troy-Bilt snow throwers. But as I was doing research for the fall/winter of 2016 I realized that no one has ever written a comprehensive article on the brand and all the snow throwers they offer. So. This is a comprehensive list of what Troy-Bilt is offering for gas snow blowers for 2016. This story is from my perspective – not Troy-Bilt’s
Troy-Bilt is only offering 2 new snow throwers this year but they have changed/improved a few major parts throughout the entire line. It’s a good year to buy a Troy-Bilt.
New restyled Troy-Bilt Engines
Click on the pictures for a larger view.
Re-styled Engines. All the engines throughout the entire line have changed. They are quieter and restyled so they easier to use. Specifically: Larger Muffler. The new mufflers are 50% larger and a quieter than previous models. Easy Access Controls. Now, when you look over the dash at the engine you can easily see all the controls and their functions. Troy-bilt changed the labels so the operation is a lot easier to understand. The controls are angled towards you so you don’t have to bend over. New Fuel Tank. The fuel tank is no designed so it will not rust. It also has a larger fill opening. New 110v Starter Controls. The 110v starter push button and plug are now part of the engine instead of a stick-on optional feature.
Troy-Bilt Chute Controls
New Controls. There was nothing actually wrong with the old forearm control (single joystick) control. The real problem was no one knew how to use it. For 2016 Troy-Bilt replaced it with the crank/lever system that just works.
Troy-Bilt Handle Bolts
Stronger Handles. Troy-Bilt always had that one plastic finger nut to hold the handles together. It was hard to turn and most of us never got the nut tight enough so that the handles didn’t have some flex in them. Besides – what was that extra hole for? Did we get all the parts? For 2016 Troy-Bilt has gone back to the four bolts and will use locking nuts so you can get the handles tight. This simple fix has taken all the bounce out of the handles. The handles are much stronger now but the change does require a wrench to assemble your new snow blower.
Troy-Bilt Airless Tires
New Airless Tires. Remember the old smooth snow blower tires that you must have chains on to get any traction? These are not those tires! The new tires are airless and flexible. Troy-Bilt designed them so the middle is higher than the outer edges. This will let the tire dig into the snow better and will offer less turning resistance when used on the solid axle snow blowers. In fact moving the snow blowers around my garage I quickly noticed that a 28 inch with the new Airless tires takes less effort to turn than a 24 inch with the deep lug snow tires. Yes, the rim is metal.
Poly Skid Shoes
Poly Skid Shoes. Steel shoes are gone. The long wearing poly skid shoes will be used throughout the entire line this year.
Troy-Bilt Heavy Duty
New Heavy-Duty Snow Blowers. Large frame, 14 inch impeller, big metal chute, thick steel, heavy-duty gearbox. The new heavy-duty 30 and 34 inch snow blowers have replaced the outdated 33 and 45 inch. I’ll go through the details about them at the end of this article.
The new Arctic Storm™ 34 Snow Thrower is really the “sleeper” snow blower of the year for large area clearing. Check out the video below.
Why The Brand: MTD owns many brand names but markets 3 primary names to the United States, Troy-Bilt, Cub Cadet and Yard Machines. In the past the Troy-Bilt was aimed towards residential use, Cub Cadet was aimed towards farmers and Yard Machines was aimed towards the value based customer. Today though, Troy-Bilt has taken a slightly different marketing approach and is mainly sold through Lowes, and a few other select retailers like Northern Tool.
Overall, Troy-Bilt and the Troy-Bilt XP lines are good value gas-powered residential snow throwers. That means they are not the cheapest/weakest or the heaviest-duty/most expensive on the market. As a homeowner they will give you your money’s worth and with a little maintenance last years. When sized to the amount of snow you get and the area you have to clear you can always feel good that you made the right decision in purchasing a Troy-Bilt. Troy-Bilt does not make a commercial snow blower and do not have electric snow throwers listed on their website at this time. They only market to residential owners and with the addition of the new 30 and 34 inch snow blowers for 2016 have a size that will fit just about any driveway.
Sales: The most popular and best value Troy-Bilt snow blowers are sold through Lowes. Lowes appears to focus on price so many of the Lowes machines do not have the extra features like power steering that Troy-Bilt is known for. Troy-Bilt does offer other models that have more features through smaller rural lifestyle stores, Northern Tool and Amazon Prime. Northern Tool and Amazon are sold with free shipping.
Northern Tool has been offering mail-order/online since 1981 and is one of the most well-respected companies for Rural Lifestyle and Small Business. Northern Tool and Amazon are intent on becoming two of the best online stores. I trust both companies to deliver you a great product and an even greater buying experience.
Parts – Service: Troy-Bilt has a well established parts and repair network. You can quickly set up service or get parts through the Owner’s Center. Both Northern Tool and Amazon are very easy to work with if you have a problem with your new machine.
Owner Reviews: Depending on the model, Troy-Bilt Snow Throwers averages 4 out of 5 stars or better at Lowes.com. The biggest complaint/issue continues to be the general lack of knowledge that owners have about using fresh fuel and storing gas engines with fuel stabilizer in the tanks. This is an industry problem – not just a problem with Troy-Bilt. If you are not using a sealed gas can and fuel stabilizer you are just asking for problems even on brand new machines.
All Troy-Bilt gas engine snow throwers have a 4-cycle engine.
Troy-Bilt typically does not sell off discontinued models in the spring but waits until the next fall. In particular there are some previous year 45 inch models available right now.
So, here is the list of the 2016 Troy-Bilt snow blowers. You may ask any questions about these models in the comments section at the end.
Please Note: If a snow thrower is listed on Lowes.com I will try to note it here but I have no relationship with Lowes.com (U.S.) so I will not insert a link to Lowes. I do have a relationship with lowes.ca (Canada) Northern Tool and Amazon where I make a small commission if you buy through this site. I will give you buy links to Northern Tool and Amazon if they carry a model. My readers and I have had great luck buying through Northern Tool and Amazon but it is up to you to find the best place for you to purchase your snow thrower.
2nd Note: Amazon carries 9 of the Troy-bilt snow throwers and offers free shipping BUT There are also another 25 private sellers who also sell on Amazon. Those private sellers do not have free shipping and the snow blowers do not have the Amazon A-Z guarantee. (this is not exclusive to Amazon. Many other websites use what the industry calls “endless aisle” where they stock certain items but also list similar products from other companies. Please be a savvy shopper and check twice where you are buying from.)
Troy-Bilt offers four single stage gas snow throwers this year. It will clear it OK if the pile has not frozen but if it has frozen solid take a snow shovel with you to break up the snow so the snow thrower can move it for you.
NOTE: If you would like a track drive Troy-Bilt – don’t wait. They usually sell out quickly every year.
The new high-capacity Troy-Bilt Artic Storm Snow Throwers are a big deal. Why? The old 33 and 445 inch models had been around for many years. They were expensive, heavy, underpowered and very out-dated. The old 33 inch model was an OK machine but the 45 inch – was just worthless. I could go on about the mechanics in the old snow blowers not being heavy enough, etc. but you get the picture.
The new models are a complete redesign.
The new 30 and 34 inch models will give the other “heavy-duty” snow blowers a run for the money.

2016 Husqvarna Snow Blowers – What’s New & Exciting!
It’s been two years since I’ve written a new article on the Husqvarna Snow Blowers so it’s time to revisit the entire line. I’m going to stay consistent this year and write this article to the same layout as the articles I’ve written on Ariens, Craftsman and Troy-Bilt. So this is a comprehensive list of what Husqvarna is offering for gas snow blowers for 2016. This story is from my perspective – not Husqvarna’s. I’ve written individual reviews and made videos of many of these machines over the last two years.
Husqvarna completely rebuilt their snow blower line two years ago and except for the addition of one 27 inch tracked snow blower last year they have not changed the line for 2016. Just remember, Husqvarna was the first to introduce long lasting engines, quiet mufflers, adjustable height handles, two easy to understand grades of residential snow blowers, and heavy-duty tracked snow blowers. The improvements in the snow blowers listed here made the rest of the industry take a “step up.” They were also the first to introduce cast iron impellers on the heavy duty models. When they rebuilt the line they also fixed some of the long standing bugs like sticky power steering on the old Crown series.
Why The Brand: Husqvarna is the world’s largest Outdoor Power Equipment brand. HusqvarnaGroup is an easy to understand organization because it is publicly traded and they spend a lot of time explaining what their market is and who they build products for. Here is their take on the U.S. Market “The retail landscape is highly consolidated in North America and competition in the mass consumer segment is fierce with a strong emphasis on price.”
Their snow blowers are designed and made here in the U.S. They are sold worldwide. Husqvarna focuses on residential gas snow blowers and offers a complete and very easy to understand line. They only make 12 walk behind snow blowers. Three single stage, four economy residential models, three heavy duty residential models and two heavy-duty tracked snow blowers. Even thought the models are two years old they are still “state-of-the-art” and have proven very reliable. In fact the Husqvarna ST224 and ST224P are the two highest rated snow blowers on Amazon. (2-stage gas Snow Blowers with more than 10 reviews.)
Sales: Husqvarna has a large dealer network. In addition the snow blowers are sold through Amazon.com, Lowes, lowes.com, Acme Tools, acmetools.com and a few other regional home improvement and rural lifestyle retailers. Lowes tends to sell the most popular/least expensive machines while Acme Tools and Amazon carry the complete line.
Overall, the Husqvarna residential and heavy-duty residential lines are good value gas-powered residential snow blowers. That means they are not the cheapest or the heaviest-duty on the market. As a homeowner they will give you your money’s worth and with a little maintenance last years. The fact that they are rated so well on Amazon says a lot about the quality.
When sized to the amount of snow you get and the area you have to clear you can always feel good that you made the right decision in purchasing a Husqvarna. They do not make a commercial snow blower though the 300 series tracked machines are as heavy-duty as they come. They do not have electric snow throwers listed on their website at this time but Husqvarna is heavily invested in electric technology for the landscape market.
Acme Tools has been offering mail-order/online since 1999 and is one of the most well-respected companies for Rural Lifestyle and Small Business. Acme Tools and Amazon are intent on becoming two of the best online stores. I trust both companies to deliver you a great product and an even greater buying experience.
Parts – Service: Husqvarna has a well established parts and repair network. You can quickly set up service or get parts through the support tab on Husqvarna.com. Both Acme Tools and Amazon are very easy to work with if you have a problem with your new machine.
Owner Reviews: Depending on the model, Husqvarna Snow Blowers averages 4 out of 5 stars or better at Lowes.com and Amazon.com. In fact, the two 24 inch models are the best reviewed 2-stage gas snow blowers on Amazon. Again: If you read any reviews about an auger belt breaking. That problem was only in the first year of production and has been fixed.
All Husqvarna gas engine snow throwers have a 4-cycle engine. All 2-stage machines have a fuel shut-off valve. Please use a fuel stabilizer when storing the snow blower with fuel in it.
My goal is to help you find the right snow blower for you. You can get the best deal but if it is on the wrong snow blower it’s a lose/lose for both you and the company you purchased it from. Yes, I do recommend the 2-Year Lawn & Garden Extended Protection Plan on Amazon if offered.
Husqvarna offers three single stage gas snow throwers this year. It will clear it OK if the pile has not frozen but if it has frozen solid take a snow shovel with you to break up the snow so the snow thrower can move it for you.
The Husqvarna single stage snow throwers are good machines but they are no my first choice for a single stage unit. Why? They clean the pavement well, they are easy to use, etc., but they use a scraper under the snow blower to clean all the snow off the driveway. This scraper is about 2 inches behind the paddles and always leaves a small pile of snow 2 inches wide and about 1/2 inch tall. This means that if you are a fanatic for having a perfectly clean driveway you will have to go back out with a shovel or broom to clean up a few inside corners where the snow thrower left this small strip of snow.
The ST 111 is a low powered, inexpensive snow thrower that I only recommend for people who get very little snow every year. In other words, if you can’t remember the last time you got 6 inches of snow this machine may be a good choice. If you buy it just because it’s the cheapest snow thrower you will complain about it being under powered and a bad choice for you.

If you get a lot of 2 to 6 inch’ers and an occasional 8-10 inch snow the ST131 may be a good choice for you. The extra power of the 208 cc engine will quickly cut through heavy, wet snow and throw it clear of your 2 car driveway.

If you get a lot of 2 to 6 inch’ers and an occasional 8-10 inch snow the ST151 may be a good choice for you. I have had one around here for two winters and the extra power of the 208 cc engine will quickly cut through heavy, wet snow and throw it clear of your 2 car driveway. The remote chute is very easy to use and lets you change the throwing direction without stopping the snow thrower. The six LED lights are very bright. The light is plenty for night work.

Husqvarna makes two styles or grades of 2-stage snow blowers. The 200-series and 300-series. The 200 Series is a great, economical 2-stage snow blower. The 200-Series are a good for most areas of the United States that get 80 inches of snow or less a year. That means they are a good choice for Chicago, Denver, St Louis, Long Island and Pittsburgh. They are not a good choice for areas that get large amounts of heavy, wet snow like Hammond, IN and Buffalo, NY. It did not work well in Boston the year they got so much snow. (Buy the 300 series if you get 60 inches or more snow.)
The 200-series has two features that are unique and no other snow blower has either feature at this time – adjustable height handles and dual LED lights.
The adjustable height handle is a cool feature and great for homeowners who have a tall person and a short person using the same snow blower. But, please don’t buy this series just for the adjustable handles. Make sure it will handle the amount of snow you usually get. The six LED lights are also cool because they are split and angled so the light shines all around the snow blower. They are bright and have no shadows from the discharge chute.
By the way, the 200 series has hand warmers but they do not work very well. The 200 series does have all the other great features you want like remote chute, remote deflector, deep lug tires

This model is the highest rated 2-stage snow blower on Amazon.com but I want you to be clear what it is. This model does not have power steering so it may be hard to turn if you are small or have a bad back. The wheels are locked on the axle so they both turn at the same time. When you want to turn the snow blower you have to skid the tires. In other words, my 30 year old son-in-lawn has one and loves it. I would want the next one on the list – the ST224P with power steering.

This is the best value 2-stage snow blower listed on Amazon.com. It is a great machine for your typical 2 car suburban driveway. It has all the features of machines costing $500-900 more. It throws snow well, is easy to use, has great traction and with a little maintenance will last most of us years and years. I have a 16 by 70 paved driveway, a 10 by 80 gravel driveway, a small patio and I clean a spot off the lawn for my dogs. My average snowfall is about 50 inches a year. This is a perfect choice for me.

People who buy this snow blower like it, but I feel there are better value 30 inch machines. In particular I like the Troy-Bilt 3090 XP, Craftsman 30 inch and Ariens Deluxe 30 better. This is the only Husqvarna I’m not very excited about.

The only thing in these snow blowers have in common with the less expensive 200 series is the Husqvarna name and the color. The Husqvarna 300-series Snow Blowers have a full list of features and durability that rivals any other snow blower on the market. They are suitable for frequent use in all snow conditions. They are robust, durable and comfortable to use. In particular I like the controls. All the controls are large for gloved hands. The chute/deflector controls have positive notches so it stays in place. Bright LED headlights make operation easy even in dark conditions. The 300 series is one of the few snow blowers with a hydrostatic transmission and gives you a very smooth and even motion. (Husqvarna uses two hydro’s. The wheeled units use the same as the red snow blower that costs twice as much. The tracked version use a heavier transmission than the red competitor) The power steering on the 300 series is trouble-free.
In other words if you want one of the best snow blowers on the market with a hydrostatic transmission these machines will save you $1000 over the red competitor.
Is it in the same class as the Ariens Platinum, Cub Cadet 3X HD or Toro PowerMax HD? Yes. Is it better? Like the other models it has specific features that make is the best choice for some owners. I can help you decide if it is the best for you.
By-the-way, Consumer Reports has never tested the 300 Series. I have an ST-327P that I use here for a reference machine.
If you regularly get 12 inch or deeper snow falls but have a smaller drive, say 2-car 60-80 feet, this is a great choice. One nice feature of a hydrostatic over the gear drives is you can get the snow blower to move SLOWLY. With most gear drive snow blower the first gear is too fast for the really deep snow. This snow blower also has one of the highest intakes so it will cut through drifts that just the other machines can’t. If I lived in one of the older subdivisions in Alsip,Ill, Hammond, IN or around Fort Drum, NY this would be my choice.

These are big, strong, high-capacity, high power machines and they are a great value compared to the current Honda 28 and 32 inch tracked snow blowers. They blow snow a long way and don’t plug up when clearing wet snow. The only complaint I have is you can adjust the front end so it rides off the ground but changing that adjustment takes some practice to be able to use it well. It has three positions and free-floating mode. I’ve read a few reviews where new owners couldn’t figure this out.
One of the best features of the 3-point tracks on these snow blowers is that they have more clearance under the machine than models with only 2-point tracks. This is very beneficial when clearing really deep snow or clearing snow off turf where you don’t want to damage the turf. The combination of the 3-point tracks, the wide tracks and being able to lock the front off the ground allows you to actually go up and clear the top of a snow drift without getting stuck. Say you have a snow drift that’s 4 feet deep – You can use this snow blower to cut 18 inches r so at a time and cut a path completely through the drift. You can’t do that with a wheeled snow blower or with 2-point tracks. They get stuck or don’t have enough clearance under the snow blower.
These machines are expensive but well worth the money if you have a steep slope, soft ground, a walking path or really deep drifts to clear. It also works really well for gravel or cobblestone because you can raise the front auger housing so you don’t catch it on the cobble or pick up rocks.
These machines are heavy but almost anyone can drive them. You can’t just grab the handles and whip them around at the end – you have to pull the power steering lever and let it turn itself. Heck, the track drives alone weigh more than a single stage snow thrower. But that is also one of their best feature’s. They almost never run out of traction and they will run is a perfectly straight line until you tell them to turn. They are great for long, long, long driveways.
NOTE: You will read a few reviews that state the power steering sticks. This is not true on the current ST300 series machines. That was the older 1830 and 1827 EXLT models that had the sticky power steering.
This unit will go through a 32 inch door.

This is really one of the strongest and highest capacity snow blowers on the market. In fact I am going to say the Ariens Professional 28 Hydro is it’s only competitor. (this snow blower handles wet snow better and has more power than the Honda HS1332AT)

I am working on the review of the new Troy-Bilt 34XP. Until I get that done – here are two videos

Snow Joe sent the new cordless two stage snow blower.
I’ve had a chance to unbox it and get it ready for snow. Enjoy the video.
Feel free to ask any question in the comments below.
I’m in the process os comparing it to a typical 24 inch gas snow blower. I should have that video done by Novemeber 8th.
If you decide that this Snow Joe is the right snow blower for you the best price is here – on Amazon: Snow Joe iON24SB-XR 80V Max 5.0 Ah Cordless Self-Propelled Two-Stage 3-Speed + Reverse Digital Drive Snow Blower
The post Snow Joe iON24SB-XR 80V Max Cordless Self-Propelled Two-Stage Snow Blower Unboxing appeared first on MovingSnow.com.
Now that Snow Joe has introduced the new 24 inch 2-stage cordless snow blower it’s time to ask if a cordless electric snow blower is a better solution than a gas-powered 2-stage machine. So, I am going to go through a list of the features of this new lithium-ion cordless snow blower compared to its equivalent gas competitor. Then I will go through a quick energy cost comparison and to wrap up a bunch of pictures so you can compare the actual differences.
For this article I will use the Troy-Bilt 2410 as the gas equivalent. It’s a very good example of a typical, quality, inexpensive snow blower that you will find at the retailers today. It retails for $599, the same price as the Snow Joe without batteries.
With a gas-powered snow blower you buy your fuel as you need it. With the cordless electric snow blower you buy your “fuel” up front in the form of batteries.
I’m not going to try to sway you one way or the other.
Troy-Bilt Storm 2410 and Snow Joe iON24SB-XR
Snow Joe iON24SB-XR 80V Max Cordless Self-Propelled Two-Stage Snow Blower
Just the snow blower $599. Batteries cost $200 when you buy them with the snow blower. total $799
Buy at Amazon: Snow Joe iON24SB-XR 80V Max 5.0 Ah Cordless Self-Propelled Two-Stage 3-Speed + Reverse Digital Drive Snow Blower
In my reasoning the $200 in batteries is comparable to getting a store credit for $200 worth of fuel and a fuel can. Typically the current Lithium Ion batteries last for 500 charges and will run at 90% capacity in temperatures below freezing. So, when the seller advertises “40 minute run time” expect at least 35 minutes of normal use.
I’m comparing the run time and longevity to the batteries used in today’s drones. Drones use the same type of battery with the same safe guards and balancing chargers that these batteries use. Sno Joe has been around long enough that they use quality cells in their batteries.
If you screw up and leave the batteries on the charger for 6 months – it doesn’t hurt anything. The chargers are also designed not to explode, overcharge or short out a battery.
2500 watt motor with cogged belt drive. Belt won’t slip and burn out but you may break it if an obstruction gets into the impeller. Using Google this works out to about 4 HP but there are two motors in this snow blower. One for the snow and one for the drive. 4 HP should be plenty for this size of snow blower.
Good for the planet? According to the current science – YES!
Troy-Bilt 2410 2-stage gas snow blower – the Facts:
The Troy Bilt 2410 is an example of a good, basic 24 inch snow blower on the market today. It’s priced well, has plenty of power and very dependable. When sized properly to your driveway it will last years. It has the same features of the Snow Joe. Solid Axle, multiple speeds, same size tires and chute control.
Just the snow blower $599. Fuel can, fuel, oil and maintenance parts for gas engine are extra over the life of the snow blower.
You can find out where to buy the 2410 here: Storm™ 2410 Snow Thrower
There is another version I also like available at Amazon. It has an upgraded chute and the new airless tires: Troy-Bilt Storm 2460 208cc 24-Inch Two-Stage Snow Thrower
If you screw up and leave untreated ethanol fuel in the snow blower – you may have to replace the carburetor. $80 if you do it yourself, $250 if you have it done.
208 cc engine with v-belt drive. Belt may slip and/or burn up if an obstruction gets into the impeller. Rough guess this is about 6 HP. This one engine drives both a larger impeller and the drive system. It is plenty for this size of snow blower.
Good for the planet? According to the current science – Not so much!
I’m going to go through a quick cost of fuel versus using batteries.
80 volt 5AH batteries last 40 minutes blowing snow.
Okay, now to calculate the Kilowatt-hours (kWh) of your electric snow thrower, simply multiply those two numbers together and divide by 1000:
80 volts x 5 Amp-hours / 1000 = 0.4 kWh
This means that it takes about 0.4 kW to charge your batteries for one hour. In most cases, you will need to charge for about 4 hours, so let’s say the total consumption for a complete charge cycle is:
4 x 0.4 = 1.6 kWh
Cost to Charge your snow blower batteries: The cost per kWh varies on the provider, the user, and the time period in most parts of the country. A good, round number that is close to the average is $0.14 per kWh. Let’s get back to our calculator:
$0.14 x 1.6 kWh = $0.23
Cost of Batteries: $200 if you buy them with the snow blower. A good guess for the battery life is 500 cycles. So the replacement cost is about $.40 each time you use them.
Total Cost of batteries. So each time you use them for 40 minutes your total cost is $0.63.
Most people use their 24 inch snowblower 10-15 times a year. So the cost of the battery life and electricity is $6.30 to $9.45
208 cc engine uses about 1/2 gallon of fuel in 40 minutes.
Typical fuel cost $3 per gallon = $1.50 per 40 minutes
In addition we need to add the cost of a storage can, Fuel stabilizer, going to get the fuel, oil changes and other gas engine related costs. A snow blower engine does not use an air cleaner.
Fuel Stabilizer 1 oz per gallon = $0.20, get fuel = $0.50, Fuel Can 500 use life = $0.08. Oil, spark plug etc., = .05
Total cost for gas fueled engine. So each time you use it for 40 minutes your total cost is $2.32
Most people use their 24 inch snowblower 10-15 times a year so the cost of fuel per year is $23.32 to $34.80
I’m using a 2016 Troy-Bilt 2410 as the comparison snow blower for this article. This Troy-Bilt is similar to many of the other 24 inch snow blowers on the market so you can get a feel for how the Snow Joe compares to them. Other similar snow blowers are the Craftsman 88172, 88173, Cub Cadet 524, Husqvarna ST224, Ariens Compact 24, SnoTek, and Toro 724 Power Max. The Troy-Bilt is a better build than cheaper machines like the PowerSmart, Yard Max and DHT.
The 12 inch impeller, 208 cc machines will out-perform this snow blower but I have a feeling this Snow Joe will out perform the single speed 179cc, 22 inch machine many of you have sitting in the corner. This will be a great replacement for those of you who want a small 2-stage machine.
It actually compares to the older Noma/Simplicity built 24 snow blowers from the 80’s and 90’s. I wish I still had the Montgomery Wards I had a few year ago. It’s just about the same size and power.
Overall the Snow Joe is quite different from a gas-powered 2-stage snow blower. If you live in an area of the country that gets 20-30 inches of snow a year. If you live in town and don’t get deep drifts. If you have a single or two car driveway 30-50 feet long. If you don’t want to mess with gas – this can be a great snow blower for you.
By the way, if you already have other 40 volt Snow Joe / Sun Joe products those batteries will fit in this snow blower! For example, I also have two 4 AH batteries so I can get over an hour’s use before I have to recharge.
The Snow Joe’s intake is about 13 inches. This is about the same as most 24 inch snow blowers made before 2005. Many people who don’t get huge drifts like the lower intake. It has about the same length chute as the Troy-Bilt 2410 we will be comparing it too. By the way, the floor in my shed is not flat.
8 inch front auger, 8 inch impeller on the Snow Joe compared to 12 inch auger, 12 inch impeller on the Troy-Bilt Plenty of notches to chew through tough snow.
8 inch front auger, 8 inch impeller on the Snow Joe compared to 12 inch auger, 12 inch impeller on the Troy-Bilt. Shear pins on every auger flight to protect the snow blower.

Poly chute the Snow Joe and poly chute on the Troy-Bilt are about the same height and size.

New location of engine controls on the Troy-bilt make it a lot easier to use than your old gas-powered snow blower.
Drop in the charged batteries and turn the key, the Snow Joe is ready to clear snow
The 2 Snow Joe 5 AH batteries on dual quick charger
We consider these tires “cheap” but for the Snow Joe I feel they are just right. Why? because the Snow Joe is a lot lighter than a gas-powered 2-stage snow blower so it will not need deep lugged tires. Both the Snow Joe and the Troy-bilt 2410 have a locked, solid axle so both wheels have traction all the time.
What are the windows for? Blue Glow Lights! of course!
The Troy-Bilt 2410 has great tires for the price of the snow blower. These have deep soft treads so you get the best traction for the size. Both the Snow Joe and the Troy-bilt 2410 have a locked, solid axle so both wheels have traction all the time.
Dash on the Snow Joe. Three speeds forward, one reverse. Safety, Panic Stop Button. Key safety switch. Light Switch. Wheel drive lever UNDER the left handle. Safety button and auger drive lever UNDER right handle. Note: this is different from the other snow blowers. If you have small hands you may have problems holding these levers with gloves on.
Dash on the Troy-Bilt. Left hand grip auger control. Right hand grip speed lever. Six speeds forward, 2 speeds reverse.
Closeup picture of the hand control on the Snow Joe. It’s different from what you are used to.
Troy-Bilt 2410. Interior of the Transmission. this is a “standard” friction disk transmission and the have an excellent reputation of lasting for years and years. Other than wiping a little oil on the lower hexagonal shaft every few years there is really nothing that ever needs to be done.
Interior of the Snow Joe Transmission Case. It looks more complicated but it’s really not. There is one brushless electric motor for the drive wheels and another larger motor for the impeller/auger. A few wires, connectors and a hermetically sealed motor controller. Like the Troy-Bilt it also uses a bronze reduction gear so there is no real need for lubrication for many years. This drive system uses two cogged belts that are available on the Snow Joe website.

I’m getting the videos done! Here is 10 minutes with the new Troy-Bilt Arctic Storm 34.
It’s time to take another hard look at Troy-Bilt for your next snow blower. With this new heavy duty series they will give Ariens, Toro, and Husqvarna solid competition for solid, strong machines. At $1699 it’s one of the best values for this season.
I’m sure they had the choice of going with the complicated 3-stage but I am so excited about the fact that Troy-bilt choose to stick with the conventional high output 2-stage system. With the 14 inch impeller and auger – it just works.
Northern Tool has it for $1699 with free shipping and a $100 gift card right now. I don’t know how long the gift card promo will last.
There is also a 30 inch version available for $1499!
FREE SHIPPING – Troy-Bilt 30in. Arctic Storm XP 2-Stage Electric Start Snow Blower with X-Track – 357cc Engine, Model# 31AH8DR5766. This is a much heavier duty snow blower than the 3090 XP.

I am finally getting a few videos done and here is one on the new Troy-Bilt 2860 with the new airless tires. I actually posted it on YouTube 2 weeks ago but I forgot to write a post for it here on MovingSnow! Anyway,
I have not been discussing the basic snow blowers much for the last 2 years because there has not been any real change. Up to now they threw snow and most of the time got the job done. But this new snow blower changes the tempo and introduces some well-need features into the economy market.
This is the first real test of the new Troy-Bilt Storm 2860. This new snow blower replaces the old, tired 2820 economy models. It features the new airless tires, very simple long-lasting chute control, extended chute, hand warmers and no power steering. Of course it has electric start.
I’m not going to get into all the specifications. You can find them here: Storm™ 2860 Snow Thrower
What I like:
This is a good economy snow thrower and I was pleasantly surprised the first time I took it for spin around the driveway. These new airless tires make it very easy to use. This snow blower turns easily, is balanced well and “feels” a lot lighter than it is. Yes, it has good traction on the cement, on gravel and on my neighbor’s lawn. I don’t need or even want power steering with these new tires.
LET ME BE THE FIRST TO SAY: I really want a tire like this on the next new riding mower I buy! They might have to add a center rib so you don’t slide down a side slope but this is the future of L&G tires!
What I don’t like:
I really don’t have any negatives with this machine but it may not be the best choice for you.
I don’t like the fact that there will be a group of Internet trolls that will make you think twice about buying this snow blower for your average size suburban driveway. This Troy-Bilt snow blower is not a heavy-duty, high-capacity, blizzard crunching machine. But, it is a well designed, good snow blower for about 80% of the U.S. It will last years with a little maintenance. I have no problems suggesting it for Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Minneapolis, Long Island and New Jersey.
My neighbor has an 20-year-old Yard Machines with a 9 HP Tecumseh. I let him use this snow thrower the last time it snowed. He has a one car 200 foot long asphalt driveway and a 40 X 40 pad in front of the garage. He also clears a smaller gravel driveway and the plow pile around three mailboxes. He loved it and said this is exactly the snow blower he has been looking for.
Before you buy one:
Be aware this snow blower will do the job for you but it won’t do it as fast as your son’s $1800 Ariens Platinum SHO. It won’t throw as far as the $3000 Honda. But for the $899 price it’s a really good value machine. It will handle 4-6 inch snows quickly. When you have 10-12 inches you will have to slow down to 1st or 2nd gear. It will take on that 24 inch drift through the middle of your driveway and clear it.
If you have used a snow blower before you know that how far the machine throws the snow is very dependent on the type of snow. This Troy-Bilt 2860 snow blower is pretty average for that. In other words it throws normal snow well, heavy wet snow ok, really light snow not as far and slush barely at all. Like 95% of the snow blowers on the market, if you step into a pile of snow and it splashes – this machine is not going to throw that slop and will most likely plug. If the snow is that wet you can always use it as a plow to push the slush off to the side.
Be aware it turns easy enough but it does not have power steering. If you have a bad back or you are small you may want to spend a little more and buy a snow blower with power steering.
In Summary:
This is a nice size snow blower for most driveways that is surprisingly easy to use with the new airless tires.
I consider this an excellent basic snow blower for most areas of the country that get 40-70 inches of snow a year. It will work well on 2-18 inches of snow and one or two car driveways up to 150 feet long. It can easily be adjusted for cement, black top, gravel driveways. With the long wearing poly skid shoes you can also use it on your stained concrete or nice patio. You can even adjust it for clearing a section of the lawn for your dogs.
Yes, this is a good value, well designed American made snow blower that will last you years on your residential property.
IN FACT: There is no need to even consider a Chinese made snow blower anymore. (A few Chinese made snow blowers – Dirty Hand Tools, DEK, Powersmart, Worldlawn, AAVIX, Amico, and Powerland)

I have a horrible problem. I actually have too many snow blowers to test this year. We just started getting decent snows to test them out and I haven’t been able to get caught up.
I know you don’t feel sorry for me.
That said, I purchased a Husqvarna ST327P myself and I’ve never had the chance to really make a decent video of the capabilities of this heavy duty hydrostatic snow blower. So when my neighbor Jason told me his 20 year old Cub Cadet was finally worn out I asked him if he would use this snow blower this year and make a few videos.
So, here is a chance to see the ST327P in action. Personally I like how smooth the hydrostatic drive is, how far it throws snow and that the engine never lugs down. The 291 cc LCT engine has plenty of power for the size.
Feel free to ask questions in the comment section below. Did you like his video? I’ll ask him to make more if you do.

Ariens Co., which makes a variety mowers aimed at consumers in addition to its commercial machines, has begun construction on a new concept store in Brillion, Wisconsin.
Ariens says in a news release the new store will be directly across the highway from its global headquarters.
“The store will be used to demonstrate best-in-class dealership practices, test merchandising concepts that might be offered to our network of dealers, and learn more about overall customer experience,” says Dan Ariens, chairman and CEO.
Ariens has partnered with local dealer Mike Buboltz to manage the store as a power equipment dealership. Buboltz is the owner of Hardware Plus in Brillion and has sold Ariens equipment since 2011. The new dealership will be open to the public for sales of Ariens and Gravely brand outdoor power equipment and parts. Hardware Plus will continue to operate its current store.
This will not be a “factory direct” store with discounted products and close-out pricing, according to Ariens. Instead, the business will operate as an independent dealership. Buboltz will manage day-to-day retail activities, while product placement, point-of-sale, and marketing support will come directly from Ariens’ marketing team.
The company has more than 1,500 dealers throughout North America who sell lawn, snow and commercial outdoor power equipment.

I apologize to all of you trying to buy a snow blower this week. I’m trying to get my new office area finished this week (moving out of the bedroom!) and I still don’t have all the new snow blower information from the major players. For some reason half of these corporations think you don’t need a snow blower until October! I’ll be posting new articles on all the current and new snow blowers after labor day!

Officially, Craftsman added one 24 inch 2-stage with power steering this year. The brand new Craftsman 88640 24″ 208cc Dual Stage Zero-Turn Snowblower features large tires, large poly skid shoes and a simple, easy to use chute control. This is a snow blower that I’ve felt Craftsman should have had many years ago and I’m really excited that they built it with the features that owners want the most. I’ll review it a little later in this article.
There are also a few engine and other updates for individual machines. I’ll list those down below.
I know many of you also missed the introduction of the heavy-duty 30 and 34 inch Craftsman Pro models and the larger 28 inch quiet engine model last year so I’ll also go over them in detail.
I’m going to start with the economy models first and then the most popular Deluxe models. After that I’ll review the heavy-duty models followed by the 3-stage snow blowers. I’ll leave the single stage machines for last.
When you read snow blower reviews you are going to find reviews that state “the engine would not start,” “the engine won’t stay running.” and “the engine runs rough.” You will find these reviews for all brands and sizes of snow blowers.
98% of the time engine problems with snow blowers are either fuel or operator related. Snow engines run/operate differently than your lawn mower engine. Educating yourself on how to store fuel, how to keep your fuel clean and how/why your snow blower engine runs the way it does will go a long way to liking your new snow blower. Please read this article to learn more: Buying A New Snow Blower FAQS – Read This For The Truth
You and I know that the news media feels the only way they can get your attention is to write “gloom & doom” headlines. Craftsman, Sears Repair Services and Sears Parts Direct are all doing well and will continue to serve you for many years to come. Remember – the news media wrote all those “the company will never make it” headlines about Amazon for the first ten years it was around.
To take this a little farther here is an accurate response I wrote to a reader last month who wanted to buy a new Craftsman.
From Terri: thanks Paul…thing is, Sears standing in the universe is questionable at best…what would happen with the warranty…if they go and I get my machine from them? Thanks again!
MY RESPONSE: Hi Terri, Did you know Sears is building/remodeling stores? Of course you didn’t – the main stream news only wants you to know the negatives about Sears and other things that don’t agree with their viewpoint on the world. Sorry, that’s my politics for the day……
Three points you should know. I hope this helps.
1. Sears may or may not go out of business but that will not affect the repair/warranty and parts for Craftsman. The company who actually repairs your tractor is Sears Repair Services and the company you get parts from is Sears Parts Direct. These two companies are not part of the Sears that the news says is going belly up.
2. Craftsman is now owned by Stanley/Black & Decker. Sears sold it off in January. Part of that sale allows Sears to sell Craftsman products for quite a while but the sale also allows Stanley/Black & Decker to sell Craftsman anywhere they want.. I wouldn’t be surprised in the next 5 years to see Craftsman in the same stores that sell Black & Decker and DeWalt.
3. When you buy your tractor there will be a model number under the seat. The model number on your snow blower is on the rear frame. If that model number starts with 247 the tractor/snow blower is made by MTD and 90% of the parts are also found on a Cub Cadet, Columbia or Troy-Bilt. If the model number starts with 917 the tractor/snow blower was made by Husqvarna and 90% of the parts are also found on Husqvarna and Poulan Pro machines. In addition, the engines and transmissions are made by companies that sell to all brands and you can get parts for them at any mower repair shop.
Most models of snow blowers are in stock at your local Sears store. Order it online through the links in this article and pick it up at your nearest Sears. You may also have it delivered to your home. Note: Sears Hometown Stores may not carry all models in stock.
One last Note: All of the links in this article will take you to Sears.com. There you can purchase/order your snowblower and have it delivered to your home or pick it up at your local Sears. Sears has many ways to buy and many ways to save. Always check the special offers tab on the snow blower page itself. Yes, You ALWAYS get the best deal buying online at sears.com. When you buy through those links I make a small commission on the sale.
Let’s get started!
Craftsman has 3 snow blowers that are inexpensive, yet do the job for many homeowners. All three machines use the same quality parts as the more expensive machine – they just don’t have as many features or power. They have the same warranty as the more expensive models. One model, the 88173 is one of the best value snow blowers on the market today. If you live in a subdivision with a 2 car driveway and get 80 inches of snow or less a year it’s a great choice.
Model 88173: The 24 inch 88173 continues to be one of the best value snow blowers on the market. Craftsman arguably has sold more units than any model. It works well for 2 car driveways up to 80 feet or so and can easily handle a 12 inch or deeper snow. The high intake also means it can clear that 21 inch snow plow drift the snow plows left you over night. I highly recommend this snow blower if you have a 2 car driveway about 80 feet long, (or single car equivalent) get an average snow fall of 80 inches or less a year. It’s designed to work on gravel, turf, cement and black top. The deep lug tires and 208cc engine are just the right size for this snow blower. It also has the poly skid shoes so it won’t scratch your stamped and decorative driveways and patio. Last but not least, the long discharge chute puts the snow where you want it and is very easy to use. This model does not have power steering but is light enough for most people to use. Yes, there are a lot of bigger, larger, and more expensive snow blowers on the market, but if you just want a decent 2-stage to clear your smaller driveway this is one of the best choices. It is still one of the best value machines out there.
One last thing – the Model 88173: has a 5 star rating of 68%!. That is one of the highest rating of all the snow blowers. I’m not the only one who likes this snow blower!
Model 88172: If you have to have the least expensive 2-stage snow blower on the market this is the one. The 179cc 24 inch 88172 is most like your old 5 hp Craftsman that you are replacing it with. It’s a simple snow blower capable of handling 8 to 12 inch snows. Understand the engine is not as big as the other models so it won’t throw 50 feet. With the smaller engine it will also take you longer to clear your driveway – but it will still get the job done. It’s a much better snow blower for most people than a single stage snow thrower. It’s one of the few snow blowers in this price range with electric start. The intake is higher than your 20-year-old Craftsman which means it can clear that 21 inch snow plow drift the snow plows left you over night. This is a decent snow blower if you have a 2 car driveway about 40 feet long, (or single car equivalent) get an average snow fall of 50 inches or less a year. It’s designed to work on gravel, turf, cement and black top. The deep lug tires are the right size for this snow blower. It also has the poly skid shoes so it won’t scratch your stamped and decorative driveways and patio. This model does not have power steering but is light enough for most people to use. Don’t expect this model to clear heavy, wet snow or have a lot of traction for clearing the snow plow drift.
Model 88433: There are a few people who just have to have a 2-stage snow blower that is less than 24 inches. If you are one of those people this snow blower is basically the same snow blower as the 88172 above but with a smaller 22 inch cutting width, smaller tires, and steel skid shoes. This is a decent snow blower if you have a 1 car driveway about 40 feet long and get an average snow fall of 40 inches or less a year. Don’t expect this model to clear heavy, wet snow or have a lot of traction for clearing the snow plow drift.

Craftsman snow blowers are among the most popular snow blowers. Along with the Model 88173 above the Deluxe models in this group make up a large share of snow blowers sold in the U. S. They are just the right size and power for the majority of the homes and driveways north of Interstate 80. In other words if you normally get 2-14 inch snows and average 60-100 inches a year these are great machines. They all have a 21 inch intake height so they will handle drifts and the occasional blizzard. No, they don’t have the capacity of the heavy-duty, “snow belt” machines but for most of us they are just the right combination of features, power and price.
Model 88640: If I wanted a new snow blower this year for my 2-car Midwest driveway this snow blower would be on my shortlist. It has large tires for the best traction on gravel and turf and power steering so anyone can use it. The discharge chute is simple to use, won’t bind up and is long so the snow goes where you want it too. The engine controls have been redesigned so they are easier to see and use.
The intake is higher than your 20-year-old Craftsman which means it can clear that 21 inch snow plow drift the snow plows left you over night. This is a decent snow blower if you have a 2 car driveway 60-80 feet long, (or single car equivalent) get an average snow fall of 80 inches or so a year. It’s designed to work on gravel, turf, cement and black top. The deep lug tires are better and larger than Craftsman has ever installed on a 24 inch snow blower so it will have excellent traction. It also has the poly skid shoes so it won’t scratch your stamped and decorative driveways and patio. This model has power steering and is light enough for most people to use. Don’t expect this model to clear heavy, wet lake effect snow, but it will handle the snow plow drift at the end of your driveway well.
Model 88694: This snow blower has all the operational features you want like power steering and 4-way chute and is 45% quieter than other 208cc gas engines. If you don’t want to wake the neighbors or just want the quietest gas-powered snow blower this is the one. Best of all this snow blower is a good, quality American made snow blower that costs the same or less than the Chinese models that are trying to sneak into the country.
Model 88394: This is one of the better value snow blowers in the 28 inch size. It has all the features you want including headlight, drift cutters, long-lasting poly skid shoes and 4-way chute control. The power steering makes it easy to use the Quiet engine makes it a great engine to operate. If you need “stealth mode” to keep peace in the neighborhood this snow blowers engine is 45% quieter than the standard Craftsman 208cc engine. This is a great snow blower if you have a 2-car drive 100-150 feet long, live in an area that gets up to 80 inches of snow a year and also have gravel and turf areas to clean.
Model 88396: This is one of the large frame snow blowers that just about anyone can operate. It’s balanced very well and the controls are right where they need to be. The controls on the redesigned engine are easy to see and use. This snow blower has been around for quite some time and has proven to be an excellent, dependable machine. It’s great for larger areas and 16” x 6.5” X-Trac tires give it the extra traction and flotation needed to work well off the pavement. It is very smooth and easy to use so it works well on 2-8 inches of snow just as well as a 14-18 inch’er. Yes, Like I’ve been saying for the last 10 years – the electric chute control and thumb-joystick on this snow blower is bulletproof.

Last year Craftsman introduced this new snow blower to replace the old, tired 33 and 45 inch models but no one really explained why it’s such a leap forward for Craftsman.. I won’t spend any time explaining why the old MTD built models were so bad. Let’s just say – they are gone! – and move on.
The Model 88976 and Model 88978 snow blowers are completely new and very heavy-duty. They feature thicker steel, better components including all steel discharge chutes, 14 inch impellers and 14 inch front auger systems. These new snow blowers even have handle supports so using them is much easier than the old models.
It’s big and awesome but balanced well and surprisingly easy to use. I highly recommend these snow blowers if you have a long driveway to clear, or you get large doses of heavy, wet snow. These are high-end home owner snow blowers not commercial machines but I would have no problems recommending them to a church or other business that needs to clear large areas once or twice a week.
Compare this new heavy-duty Craftsman Pro to the Troy-Bilt Arctic Storm, Ariens Platinum 30, Husqvarna ST330P and the Toro PowerMax HD 1028.
I’ll say it – “For half the price as the Honda you get a snow blower that will perform just as well.”
This year (2107) Craftsman added the new sloped engine design. It’s much easier to see and use the engine controls.
This year Consumer Reports rated this snow blower and its fraternal twin – the Troy-Bilt Arctic Storm, as the two best 2-stage machines. In addition, it scored just as well as the Cub Cadet 3X HD.
By the way, the only difference besides the service/parts between the Troy-Bilt Arctic Storm and the Craftsman Pro is the Craftsman has a separate hand crank for the chute and lever for the deflector. The Troy-Bilt uses the electric joystick. The Craftsman Pro also has drift cutters, LED lights and an extra front light. You can watch my videos of the Arctic Storm here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=5&v=vNHWM3JYG4c and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASJb3_PqKoI&t=121s

Craftsman makes a snow blower for just about every driveway in the U.S. So, they offer two 3-stage machines. The snow blowers work well if you typically get 8-16 snows. These snow blowers don’t work well on solid, frozen snow and tend to be a little messy when blowing snow falls less than 4 inches.
Someday I’d like Consumer Reports to explain how these two snow blowers rate lower than the Troy-Bilt and Cub Cadet counterparts. They are made for Craftsman by MTD and use the same parts and come off the same assembly line as the Troy-Bilt and Cub Cadet machines. The ONLY difference is the color. Maybe their way of testing is not as an exact science as they’d like you to believe…. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H451OQnNgzk
